The Sayal Kudil

This residence in Kovilpalayam, Coimbatore, is designed for Mr.Manikandan as a contemporary interpretation of traditional material expression, where brick becomes both structure and identity. The elevation is defined by a bold perforated brick screen (jaali) that acts as a climatic buffer - filtering harsh sunlight while maintaining privacy and allowing natural ventilation. The design balances solid and void, with a clean white mass contrasting against the warm terracotta tones of exposed brick. The upper-level screen softens the facade, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow throughout the day, while also concealing internal elements like the staircase for a more refined exterior expression. Overall, the house is a blend of function, climate sensitivity, and aesthetic simplicity, creating a timeless and regionally relevant architectural statement.
